Quick Wolf Update

Been a busy couple of days. I finished off my special weapons guys, and all of my Wolf Guard. Here's a picture. Next up for me is the Long Fang pack leaders.

Wolf Updates!

So with War Games Con over, I can get back to work on my Wolves. My Special weapons guys are pretty much done, they just need the wolf pelts on their shoulder pads and some need back packs.

Special Wolves

So in the last week, I worked on a number of my space wolves. I moved heads around, and I worked on the paint job of the minis that I told to BoLScon last year. I worked on about 12 Grey Hunters and 10 Blood Claws. I took their painting quality from table top-quality to, in my opinion... < drum-roll >... good table-top quality!

So I have more of my GHs and BCs to get to this new quality (all the ones that already had bare-heads at BoLScon last year), but I've decided to work on my special weapons. I am pretty much building every combination of special weapons I think I could use, so that means 6 meltaguns, 2 flamers, and 2 plasmaguns. I really can't see me using more than this at one time.

About half of these guys already had some work done on them, and only one or two I started from scratch. All of my special weapons squads will have the wolf pelts on their right shoulders, and at the moment, only 3 of them have finished pelts, five of the remaining haven't even been started yet.

I've got the heads, base coats and bases down for everyone. My next step is to do highlights and washes. I have ordered some bits for my four wulfen, and when I get those in I will do some green stuff up for the wolf pelts and fur for the back of the clawed hands.

Oh, and btw, I hate painting yellow...

Mathhammer: Wolf Guard with Mark of the Wulfen?

So I am planning on running a Space Wolf Scout Pack in my army. I love the fact that you can really trick out the scouts (although they can be a huge points sink). The thought of 10 dudes coming in from the back field with a melta, 2 power weapons and a MoW dude can be quite scary if your opponent leaves someone in the back field. Now what I am considering doing is attaching a Wolf Guard squad leader to come in with them, but I'm not sure what I want to outfit him with. I was thinking of Mark of the Wulfen because the only thing that really seems better than one crazy mother F'er is two! But I got to wondering if there were better options, that lead me to break out the old probability hammer and figure it out.

Outfitting Wolf Guard

So Wolf Guard are an intricate part of any space wolf army. Or at the very least they are in my Space Wolf Army. Now Grey Hunters are great because they can take just about any type of war gear in the Space Wolf arsenal from Terminator Armor to combi weapons to power weapons, frost weapons, wolf claws and even thunder hammers with storm shields.

Now I don't tend to drop a lot of points into my Wolf Guard. Most of them get a power fist, and thats about it.

A-Head of the Game

So due to my spray issues, I haven't continued with my "next project." I going to have to break down and buy some GW spray on payday, the Armory isn't cutting it even in the house with low heat and humidity.

Anywho, what I am currently working on is updating my Space Wolves. Way back at x-mas, the wife bought me the Space Wolf Battle Force and I really haven't worked on it much other than to turn the scouts into Black Templar neophytes.

I did put most of the 20 dudes together way back when, but then I got caught up in another project.

F You Mech Guard!

This is totally a gimmick army. I wouldn't play this in a regular game, but I would like to take it one time against Tom's Armor company to see if it is decent or not.

HQ

Wolf Priest in Power Armor

My Turn: 2k Space Wolf List

I think this is what I'll be playing for a while.

Wulfen anyone?

So the Mark of the Wulfen upgrade that I can put in one of my Grey Hunters, Blood Claws or Wolf Guard Units. The dude in the unit that has the mark replaces the number of attacks he normally has with D6+1 attacks with rending. If someone has a special weapon (fist, claws etc.) the special rules for the weapon are not used. This is still frigging awesome. I have charged a sole survivor with the mark into a full squad of Tau fire warriors and wiped them out.

For the modeling side of this, I wanted to get a box of the 13th Company Wulfen from the old 3rd ed mini-dex Eye of Terror. These minis are pretty cool and show the fluff of the model. It says that the marked Space Wolf has shunned the use of any close combat weapons and is clawing at his opponent.

The problem is that these minis are OOP and go for a mint on eBay. I believe the original box went for $35, and I have no problem spending $7 on a mini as most metal minis are $15+ on the GW site. On ebay you are lucky to get the box for $70.

So I was cruising the interwebs and I found these bits from Maxmini as I was reading the Hogs of War blog. I'm not 100% on these, but 6 heads for $10 beats 5 dudes for $70.

I may have to pick some up.

Review: Thunder From Fenris

So the Black Library has been doing audio books for a little while now. One of the first ones they did was a Space Wolf book by Nick Kyme called Thunder From Fenris. I have been wanted to get it for some time now but I haven't been able to find it at Barnes and Noble or Borders. I finally got it off of eBay for a bit under "cover price".

I have never listened to a book on "tape" before, so I really didn't know what to expect. The guy the got to read it, Toby Longworth, did a pretty good job. There are three main characters and Toby did a pretty good job of making them all sound different (even though one of them sounded remarkably like a republican governor from California). I also enjoyed the sound effects. There were bolters and lasguns and howling wolves and the sound of a power axe going into a zombie brain; all were very interesting to listen to.

Revamped SW 1000 points.

So this is what I am thinking of for my 1000 point Space Pup army to go along with the Necrons.

Mr. Hurricane, you have a call on line 1...

So I bought the Njal Stormcaller model and I finally got him painted up so that I could take him up against Tamara last weekend. This is what I came up with.

This model was a PITA to paint. So many little bits everywhere that it was really hard to pick them all out from the primer. One of the things I like, but I'm not a 100% on are the runes in his armor and his staff. What I did is used some watered down blazing orange to get into the groves, then dry-brushed black over it, I was attempting to make it look like they were glowing.

Another think I really liked was using the Dwarf flesh paint on the skin. It just gives the skin a "ruddy" completion, and I think it looks good on the SWs (and my new dwarfs).
I'm not really thrilled with out the raven turned out. I like the wires and eye piece on the bird, but I just don't like the grey highlights I put on with a dry brush. I may have to re do it.

As for the dude in combat. I don't think hes as badass as everyone thinks. Hes a T4, W2 model with no eternal warrior, so a S8 hit or above will kill him outright. Also, most of his badassedness comes from psychic powers that have pretty short ranges. The living lightning is nice because it is unlimited range, but after that is JotWW and that has a 24 inch range, and everything else is 18 inches or less. This dude costs more than a Land Raider and I just don't know about getting him stuck in. I'd be pooping bricks against getting him out of a transport against LR or Basilisk squadrons. Anywho, I don't see me playing with him much, but hes too cool of a model NOT to pick up.

Mercenaries = SWs or CSMs

Like the title says, I want to make a army of Space Marine mercenaries, which I will name the Black Company. Black armor with Gunbolt Metal accents. The army will be themed after the Black Company books. They were some of my favorites growing up. The Black Company were a group of medieval/fantasy based mercenaries lead by powerful sorcerers.

The idea is to use a mixture of CSM, SW, and SM models to represent them, like the Iron Hand marines and the Legion of the Damned models. I was thinking of using the Death Watch Kill team models I have with their fancy shoulder pads to represent either Chosen CSM or SW Wolf Guard, that way I can use those great looking models that John gave me and actually use them without having to modify them..much..

I have both of the codexes and just can't decide which to base them from.

Any thoughts?

So here is this list. I feel weird not having a LR, or Dread, or Wolf Scouts in the list, but I think it could work.

The TW Cav are pretty friggin scary. S5, T5, 2 wound models, all but one is decked out with a PW, so they are all individuals when it comes to wound allocation, plus I'm going to stick Canis with them. The nifty thing about TW Cav is that they can assault you anywhere from 19-24 inches.

Behind them comes the 4 rhinos. I'm hoping the TW cav is scary enough to draw fire until the rhinos are in range. The 10 man GH squad with free flamer and free melta is just too good to pass up!

Behind them are the Long Fang Packs with Wolf Guard Escorts. Each unit is throwing 3 ML and 3 LCs at two different targets each turn. Thank you Cyclone Missile Launcher!

Anywho, critiques are welcome. Especially with what to do with the extra 38 points. I was thinking a Lone Wolf, but I just don't think I can deck him out nifty enough. I was considering dropping the Termie armor on the two Wolf Guard that aren't carrying the Cyclone MLs, and that would free up 50 more points.

Wolf Hoard!

This is totally a mess around list.

In this one, I'd attach the Battle Leader and stick him with the Scouts. WS5, A3 (5 hit on 3+ reroll to wound PW attacks on the charge), W2 with 10 ablative wounds coming in the backfield is gunna scare the poop outta someone.

Plus seeing 40 dudes with 3 attacks on the charge, and 20 more dudes with 4 attacks on the charge is gunna make someone wet themselves.

Oh yeah, and 15 missile launchers that can split fire every turn.

I don't think I'd play this one for anything other than a laugh.

What do you think?

Wolf Pack

So this is what I am thinking for my new Wolves:

HQ 100
Wolf Priest

Elite 180
Wolf Guard Pack x5: 2x Terminator Armor, 3x Boltgun, 3x Power fist

Elite 85
Wolf Scout Pack x5: Melta Gun

Elite 220
Venerable Dreadnaught: Twin-Linked Lascannon, Missile Launcher, Extra Armor

Troops 200
Grey Hunters Pack x9: Melta Gun, Power Fist, Rhino

Troops 200
Grey Hunters Pack x9: Melta Gun, Power Fist, Rhino

Troops 200
Grey Hunters Pack x9: Melta Gun, Power Fist, Rhino

Troops 250
Blood Claws Pack x15: Power Fist

Heavy Support 145
Long Fang Pack x5: Lascannon x2, Missile Launcher x2

Heavy Support 145
Long Fang Pack x5: Lascannon x2, Missile Launcher x2

Heavy Support 275
Land Raider Crusader: Multi-Melta, Extra Armor

67 Models including vehicles.

So the Wolf Priest goes with the Blood Claws in the LRC. The two termie WG go with the Long Fangs for some extra wounds, and for some counter assault ability if someone gets in my back-field.

I think the rest is pretty self explanitory.

I think I might switch up the Dread, and make him a CC dread, with a MM and a DCCW in a drop pod, and then I can drop him in the middle of my opponents deployment zone to maybe give the LRC and the Rhinos a turn or two to move across the board.

I think its about the least abusive Space Wolf list you will ever see. I plan to try out pretty much everything in the book, but I think this is a pretty solid list.

So, what do you think?

Beard, check. Cheese? Perhaps.

So I slapped some paint on my MM Long Fangs tonight. Only 3 of them 'cause one of them is still Bone and Green, and hasn't been dipped yet. So in stead of showing a picture of 3 dudes, that have just had some blue-grey slapped on them, I figured I'd talk about the new Space Pup special character that every has been talking about. Njal Stormcaller.

Njal's stat line is:

Did Someone Call for Fire Support?

Finally started my Long Fangs. These guys have been sitting in a foam try for almost 2 years because in the old codex they were almost unusable. They have become a shit-ton cheaper in the new codex. I'm not totally sure if they're worth it, but I figured I'd throw some paint on them.

Again, I've just done the bases, and put the first coat of blue/grey
on them. I think I'll be doing them all in steps.

So there ya go. Two squads of Long Fangs, missile launcher and heavy bolter, have the blue on it. Oh, but did I mention that I have more?

Thats right, I have enough for one squad of teach type of heavy weapons. 4 ML, 4 HB, 4 MM (one is currently painted bone and white, and has an appointment with a tube of simple green), 4 PC, and 4 LC. Seeing as I can take 4 HB and a Pack Leader for like 100 points, I think its fair to say I'll be giving these guys a whirl. I still don't know if they are worth it with no ablative wounds. I know someone will say "stick em in cover and let them go" but you don't always know they are going to have decent cover with good LoS to stick em in. Dunno, but I am looking forward to putting some weird lists together to try things out.
